'Car Surfing' Blamed In Teen's Death

POSTED: Sunday, March 9, 2008
UPDATED: 9:20 am EDT March 10, 2008

An 18-year-old man using a shopping cart to "car surf" was killed when a Cadillac sport utility vehicle he was holding onto hit a speed bump and threw him to the ground, according to authorities.

The incident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in a back parking lot of University Walk Apartments in Orange County, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Troopers said Cameron Bieberle, 18, of Winter Park, was killed when he hit the ground Sunday.

"He was riding alongside a Cadillac Escalade, sitting in the cart and hanging onto the side," said Kim Miller, spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol. "The Escalade hit a speed bump and he was ejected."

No charges were filed against 23-year-old Michael Smith of Orlando, the SUV driver. Neither Smith nor a passenger were injured, reports said.

Miller said a traffic homicide investigation is ongoing.

Car surfing is illegal and often involves a car or other vehicle and skateboarding, bicycling or roller-blading, Miller said.

"This is not safe. When you’re doing something like this, you have no control," she said. "This is exactly the kind of outcome that could happen."
