OCOEE, Fla. -- A 22-month-old boy found a loaded gun and fatally shot himself in the face early Sunday morning, according to the toddler's family.
A man told Ocoee police detectives that his son somehow found a revolver in the house and was able to accidentally shoot himself.
"The whole family is distraught and rightfully so," Ocoee police Officer Bill Richardson said. "At this point, it is an ongoing investigation and nothing has been corroborated."
A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, was angered that the gun was not locked.
"Why isn't your gun locked up?" she said. "You have locks on your cell phones, locks on your car doors and child safety locks. What is wrong with you that you don't have a lock on your handgun?"
"Children become the innocent victims of stupidity and it is sickening that this has to happen," a neighbor said.
An investigation into the shooting continues.
