Report: Hunting Rifles Sought For Columbine-Style School Massacre

POSTED: Sunday, March 16, 2008
UPDATED: 11:51 am EDT March 17, 2008

Three 13-year-old students accused of plotting a Columbine-style attack at their middle school had discussed obtaining hunting rifles from friends for a shooting rampage apparently scheduled for March, according to an arrest affidavit.

DeLand Middle School students Austin Mohr, 13, Tyler Christian, 13, and Charlene Russell, 13, were planning to target two specific students before going on a shooting spree and then killing themselves, the affidavit said.

The kids' MySpace.com threats were more than just idle talk, according to the report.

The affidavit also said the teens were actively trying to get hold of a gun -- even getting permission from friends who had hunting rifles, Local 6 reported.

Saturday, the three teens went before a judge, who decided to keep them locked up. The three were charged Friday with conspiracy to commit murder, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Charlene Russell's mother, Ruth, said her daughter was picked on at school.

"The only thing she has said was that she was sick of being picked on at school all of the time," Russell said. "They said that she was diagnosed with anti-social personality disorder and that is wrong. I got her diagnosis and it is oppositional defiance disorder and a conduct disorder."

Russell said her daughter could not have committed any violence.

"She's never had a gun in her hand," Russell said. "She doesn't have a way to get a gun. She never could have done this."

Authorities said they learned of the plot last week from the relative of a classmate who was exchanging instant messages with one of the students.

Authorities said the student threatened to lock the cafeteria during lunch and kill everyone in sight. The student also said he had been teased at school.

A hearing is scheduled to determine if the teens will be released to their parents or remain in juvenile detention.
