Fla. Officer Shot During Traffic Stop

A Palatka police officer was shot and injured during a routine traffic stop Saturday night, according to investigators.

Police Cpl. Pete Ruiz stopped a suspected drunk driver on US 17, just south of carter Road in Putnam County when he was injured, according to a sheriff's office release.

Ruiz was approaching a driver, who police identified as Paul Savage, 39, when he was surprised and shot in the left shoulder, the report said.

Savage then fled in his vehicle on US 17.

After a chase, Savage exited his car near West River Road and US 17 and fled into some woods.

He was apprehended a short time later by Palatka police officers and sheriff's deputies.

Ruiz was flown to Shands Hospital in Gainesville for treatment.

He was in stable condition late Saturday.

Savage faces several charges in connection with the incident.
