Nancy Alvarez

WKMG Local 6 News investigative reporter Nancy Alvarez is the latest addition to the station's award winning Problem Solvers Unit.

She was born and raised in South Florida and went to college at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, where she majored in communications and minored in history. Nancy is a Cuban-American whose parents left Cuba after Fidel Castro came to power.

Working closely with organizations like Latino Leadership, Nancy's passion is to take on stories that affect the Hispanic community. She recently exposed a man who scammed a Puerto Rican family in Orlando after they hired him to repair thousands of dollars in hurricane damage. The investigation led to another company picking up the project and fixing the home- a dying wish for the cancer-stricken woman who fell victim to the unlicensed contractor.

Another career highlight includes exposing a probation office sitting just steps away from an elementary school in Orlando. As a result of Nancy's investigation, the 80 sex offenders that reported there were re-assigned. The series also caught the attention of lawmakers. A bill, that's expected to pass next year, will set restrictions on how close probation offices can be to schools, parks and other places where children gather.

Before coming to Local 6, Nancy covered Brevard County, Fla., for Central Florida News 13. She spent almost two years working in their Brevard County Bureau covering general news as well as shuttle launches and landings on the Kennedy Space Center beat.

In her spare time, Nancy likes to visit the beach, read, make scrapbooks, and search for new parks or beaches to visit with her dog Sam and Snickers.
