Five college students were arrested early Thursday morning after they climbed into an alligator pool at a Daytona Beach Shores miniature golf course and tried to capture an alligator with a palm frond and duct tape, police said.

Jesse Ramos, 18; George Grampp, 18; Craig Devries, 19; Eric Tatki, 19; and Thomas Shaughnessy, 19; all freshmen at Embry Riddle University, were arrested on a charge of attempting to capture an alligator.

According to Daytona Beach Shores police, an officer saw the students climb down into the pool at the Congo River golf course. The students fled when the officer pulled up, police said.

Other officers assisted and detained the five students, who told police that two of them attempted to capture a gator while the other three served as lookouts, police said.

Congo River officials will conduct an inventory of the alligators to ensure that none are missing or injured.

The five men were booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on a bond of $1,000 each.
