MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- A man traveling with a 5-month-old was arrested early Friday morning after leading a Marion County sheriff's deputy on a chase before crashing into a mobile home and fleeing on foot, authorities said.
Americo Figueroa was arrested at about 2 a.m. after being pulled over in the 3500 block of South Pine Avenue in Marion County.
According to the sheriff's office, a deputy pulled over a maroon Mercury driven by Figueroa because the vehicle's tail pipe was dragging on the roadway. As the deputy approached the vehicle, Figueroa sped off, jumping a median and driving the wrong way on South Pine Avenue, according to the sheriff's office.
Figueroa drove into Cherry Hill Mobile Home Park and crashed into a mobile home, causing a wall to collapse on the driver's side door, deputies said.
Figueroa exited the vehicle through the passenger side door and fled on foot, deputies said. Witnesses told authorities that Figueroa lived in the park, and deputies located him inside his home, where he claimed he had been sleeping all night, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies said they believe Figueroa failed to cooperate during the initial traffic stop because he had two outstanding warrants, one out of Volusia County and one out of New York.
Two other people and the 5-month-old were traveling in the vehicle with Figueroa, but were not hurt, deputies said.
The resident living in the mobile home that was damaged is staying with a family member.
