The letter, addressed to "Dear Sea penpal," found inside the bottle was written in October and sent from Holy Name Catholic School in Bimini.

United Space Alliance worker Jill Vogel recently found the girl's message when she volunteered for beach cleanup at the Kennedy Space Center.

The girl explained that every year her Catholic school does a class project for Columbus Day and sends messages out to sea in bottles.

The girl wrote, "I hope you respond to my letter."

Vogel and other workers at United Space Alliance sent space memorabilia, including crew photos, pins, stickers and information about astronauts, to the girl and her classmates.

NASA, Keep Brevard Beautiful, and workers at the Wildlife Refuge also added items and boxed them up to send back to the school.

Vogel said she can't wait for the box to get there.

"What a cool thing for a kid," Vogel said.

The letter may have been floating at sea up to half a year.
