Disney Workers Wade Through Bags Of Tourist Trash To Find Missing Rings

POSTED: Tuesday, April 22, 2008
UPDATED: 9:00 am EDT April 22, 2008

A group of Walt Disney World workers waded through bags of tourist trash and found three platinum and diamond wedding rings thought lost forever after they were accidentally thrown away by a visiting Massachusetts couple.

Paul Campanale, his wife and two children were visiting Disney's Wilderness Lodge when he dumped a cardboard bowl into the garbage.

Campanale was not aware that the container held his wife Karen's engagement, wedding and anniversary rings.

Disney park employees told the Worcester, Mass., couple that finding the rings was highly unlikely -- and all but impossible. So, the family headed to the airport for their journey back home.

In the meantime, Wilderness Lodge executive housekeeper Drew Weaver and seven volunteers decided to wade through bag after bag of garbage, searching for the rings.

After some time, the rings were found.

Campanale, 37, a chemist, received the good news on his cell phone and Weaver met the family at the bus' next stop to deliver the rings.

Karen Campanale, 35, a teacher, said she was shocked by the find.

"That’s not the first time we’ve gone through trash -- oh, no," Weaver later said. "We don’t always find things. Many times we come up empty. But we didn’t this time."
