Child Neglect Investigator Charged With Child Neglect

POSTED: Wednesday, April 30, 2008
UPDATED: 9:39 am EDT April 30,2008

A Department of Children & Families child abuse investigator was fired after her arrest on suspicion of drunken driving with her 3-year-old child in the car, authorities said.

Jill Renee Kostiuk, 37, ran a red light over the weekend colliding with an SUV while her son was in the back seat, according to an arrest report.

She was charged with child neglect and DUI and on Monday was fired from DCF.

Kostiuk was released from jail on $24,000 bail, a jail official said.

Authorities said Kostiuk smelled of alcohol and slurred her speech when investigators spoke with her after the crash. She started crying during field sobriety exercises and refused to take a breath test, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers reported.

The trooper also charged her with child neglect for placing her son in great danger while driving drunk, according to the report.

The boy's father took custody of him at the scene before Kostiuk went to jail. She denied having anything to drink, the report said.

DCF spokeswoman Erin Geraghty said Kostiuk was based out of Fort Pierce and was still within the probationary period for employees. She started working for DCF in September 2007.

"They felt it was in the best interest of the department to go ahead and terminate that relationship," Geraghty said.

The jail didn't have her attorney's name and no listing in Kostiuk's name was found.
