WINDERMERE, Fla. -- Several large alligators -- including a possible 11 footer -- lurking at a Central Florida elementary school has prompted plans for police officers to escort children on and off campus.
Neighbors spotted the alligators Wednesday outside a pond and near a sidewalk used by Windermere Elementary students.
The alligators came so close to the school that teachers had to escort the children around the area, Local 6's Tiffany Tift said.
"Of course, everyone is concerned about the children's safety," Windermere police Cpl. Arthur Mueller said. "When you have an 11-foot alligator out here and you got small ones running around, it could be a very dangerous situation."
Trappers captured one of the alligators Wednesday. It was destroyed, Local 6 reported.
"When (trappers) got near it, it started hissing and showing aggressive behavior," Mueller said. "It started running at one of the female officers who was on the scene at the time."
At least one more alligator is believed to be lurking near or at the school. It was last seen behind the school and just feet from home.
"It went back under the water," Mueller said.
Police set up a perimeter to keep children and people away from the area.
If the alligator is not caught, officers will continue to escort children to and from school, Local 6 reported.
