Autopsy To Determine If Shooting Accidental

A man was shot in the head and killed on Monday at a Volusia County shooting range, police said.

Kevin J. McCarthy, 51, of Daytona Beach, shot himself in the right temple at about 1 p.m. at Hot Shot Shooting Range, located at 1873 N. Nova Road in Holly Hill, although it is not known if the shooting was intentional, Holly Hill police said.

McCarthy rented a .40-caliber Glock and purchased 100 rounds of ammunition, firing off 70 rounds before he was shot, Holly Hill police said.

"There were two other individuals on the range at the time. We're interviewing those individuals at this time. One of them reported hearing a gunshot (and) observing the individual collapse. Subsequent to that the subject died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," Mark Barker of the Holly Hill Police Department said.

An autopsy will determine whether the shooting was accidental, authorities said.

Under Florida law, an individual can rent and shoot a gun at a shooting range by providing proper identification and signing a waiver stating that the individual can legally possess a firearm, Local 6 News reported.
