A 15-year-old Oviedo boy who police said put a hangman's noose in a new neighbor's front yard tree did not commit a hate crime, state prosecutors said.

Oviedo police officers responded to a call in March at a home in the 1200 block of Lake Rogers Circle in the Lake Rogers Estates subdivision after a long noose was found hanging on a brach.

A sheriff's report said the African-American family living at the address had just moved into the home.

The white nylon rope was photographed by police and removed.

A 15-year-old was arrested and charged with a hate crime but prosecutors reduced the charge to a misdemeanor for trespassing Monday.

There is no word on why the teen put the noose in the tree, Local 6 reported Tuesday.
