Shark Bites Kindergartner In 18-Inch-Deep Water

'(Zane) Came Running, Screaming And Pointing At His Leg,' Mom Says

A 6-year-old was hospitalized after a fast-moving shark swam up to a group of children standing in 18-inch-deep water and bit the boy's leg.

Zane Atcha was standing in the surf near 27th Avenue in New Smyrna Beach when was surprised by the shark.

"It felt like something was bumping me," Zane said. "It kind of freaked me out."

"(Zane) came running up to me, screaming and pointing at his leg," Zane's mother said. "I could see the gash in the back of his leg."

Zane was transported to Bert Fish Medical Center where he received several stitches in his calf.

"They put some stitches on me," Zane said. "They squirted me with the gun."

Unlike several recent bites, Zane was bitten miles away from the inlet. Beach officials said it is a sign that sharks are actively combing the coast.

"One of the lifeguards said they have not had a bite this far south this year," the victim's mother said. "What are the odds, there were 12 other children in the water with him."

The shark bite is the 11th of the year and the fourth in two weeks.
