Wind-whipped fires burning near I-95 near neighborhoods in Malabar threatened several homes and livestock Sunday night.

A 17-mile stretch of I-95 was closed Sunday night from Malabar Road south to Fellsmere in Brevard County because of the fire and smoke.

Local 6 showed video of residents on top of their roofs near the interstate dousing their homes with water as flames blanketed some nearby woods.

200 Evacuated In Cocoa

In Cocoa, more than 200 families were evacuated from their homes Sunday because of wildfires.

At least one structure caught fire Sunday, Local 6 reported.

The fires closed the 524 from Cox Road to Friday Road in Cocoa. Flames were on both sides of 524 between Cox Road and Friday Road.

Homeowners received reverse 911 calls after fires quickly burned brush in their neighborhoods.

"We came back and starting getting animals ready to go," homeowner Pam Hales said. "I got some files out of the drawers and threw them in a suit case. Our neighbor, the fire burned up to her yard. And we have taken all of our boats and trucks and put them in our front yard in case it gets any closer."

Evacuations In Volusia

Also, families were evacuated from their homes in Volusia County and flames forced the closure of LPGA Boulevard.

Officials said residents in the Bayberry Lakes subdivision were evacuated from the area after flames burned woods in the area.

Fire crews from several Central Florida counties were continuing to battle the fires Sunday night.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Central Florida for Monday. The fire danger is expected to continue through Tuesday, Local 6 reported.
