Firefighter Loses Home In Brush Fire

'Person Of Interest' Taken Into Custody

A firefighter is among the residents trying to pick through charred remains of their homes after wildfires burned 15 square miles in Central Florida.

Allen Civita's three-bedroom Palm Bay home burned to the ground on Monday, leaving only metal bedsprings, melted wine glasses and the blackened hulk of the stove.

A stranger was able to kick open the front door to grab photographs from the home before the flames took everything. It's the only thing that was saved, Civita said.

Authorities have arrested a man who police said sparked a small blaze early Tuesday morning in Palm Bay, where wildfires have gutted destroyed 22 homes, damaged 140 others and scorched nearly 10,000 acres.

Officials are waiting to question Brian Crowder, 31, about that fire and the larger wildfires in the Palm Bay and Malabar area. He has not been charged with arson nor any crime connected with the fires.

Fires Continue To Burn

Meanwhile, several wildfires continued to burn in parts of Central Florida Wednesday, including one in Brevard that closed Interstate 95 between the Beachline and state Road 520.

A nearby 320-acre brush fire in Cocoa that forced the evacuation of a Ramada Inn and Super 8 Tuesday night was still burning Wednesday afternoon. It was not threatening any structures.

Also, firefighters were setting fires between Malabar and Mickel Road to help fight a 3,600-acre blaze in the area. It was only 50 percent contained, officials said.

In Palm Bay, the main fire is not considered active, Local 6 reported. However, crews are in the area working to mop up some hot spots.

Florida troopers hoped to open I-95 to traffic by later Wednesday afternoon.
