Portions of Daytona Beach were closed after quicksand-like conditions caused groups of vehicles to quickly sink and become stuck in unusually soft sand.

"Our beach patrol guys have pulled out 10 or 15 cars," Volusia County beach patrol representative Scott Petersohn said. "We've got some areas blocked off, the really treacherous stuff but any place is suspect."

Cars and sport utility vehicles sunk so deep into the sand that escape was impossible without help.

"If you come down to the beach and drive, really be aware of this red-orange sand," Petersohn said. "It does not compact like the white stuff does and it is hazardous to driving."

The soft sand is lining the coastline from Ormond Beach to Port Orange.

Beach officials said they expect hundreds of people to be pulled from the sand during the Memorial Day weekend, Local 6's Tarik Minor said.

Local 6's Tarik Minor said beachgoers helped pull an ice cream truck out of the sand Friday afternoon.
