BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Alarmed by numerous calls from would-be vacationers worried about recent -- and nationally reported -- wildfires in Brevard County, area hoteliers and tourism officials want it known that the Space Coast is open for business.
"We've received dozens of calls from people asking if they should cancel their vacations," Rob Varley, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism, told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "And of course, the answer to that is no. Our beaches and our hotels are perfect. But if you look at the TV sometimes, you could get a different story. Some of the news makes it look like Florida has been one big fire."
In addition to questions about the fires, Varley said local tourism entities are fielding calls asking if there is smoke in the air, where the nearest fires are located and if it's safe to still come to Florida.
He said it's led to a few cancellations when the fires were at their worst and Interstate 95 was closed.
"But our hotels up and down the county have been telling people that (state Road) A1A was always clear, there are no blocked roads and no fires ever affected the beaches."
It's important we get the word out, agreed Bonnie LaChance, banquet director at the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront.
"The beaches are beautiful and there are no fires around here. The only thing that's hot is our food," she said.
Jacqui McPhillips, manager of Tuckaway Shores in Indialantic, which is closer to where the Palm Bay fires occurred, said things have been relatively quiet at her property.
