1851: U.S. Army physician and bacteriologist Walter Reed is born in Belroi, Va. In 1900, Reed led the team that postulated and confirmed the theory that yellow fever is transmitted by a particular mosquito species, widely considered a milestone in biomedicine. The names of several facilities honor Reed's memory, including Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
