1881: American soldier, industrialist and politician Ambrose Burnside dies at age 57 in Bristol, R.I., due to a heart issue. Burnside was a Union Army general in the American Civil War and served Rhode Island as a governor and U.S. senator. He is perhaps most famous for his distinctive style of facial hair, which became known as sideburns, derived from his last name.
