Medical Records Discovered In Trash Bin

Paperwork Found Behind Urgent-Care Center

UPDATED: 3:57 pm EDT June 26,2008

Acting on a tip, the Rockledge Police Department confiscated medical records from a trash bin behind an urgent-care center.

The paperwork, which has been taken to the police department, was found behind the Rockledge Urgent Care Center Inc. at Fiske and Barton boulevards following a tip from a caller.

Rockledge police Cpl. Alice Deakins told Local 6 News partner Florida Today that the medical-care facility denied throwing the documents into the trash bin. The company told police it doesn't have a cleaning service that could have discarded the paperwork, and the center denied any knowledge of how the records could have been discarded, police said.

The facility told police it uses the services of an institution that shreds sensitive paperwork and that it had just completed a regularly scheduled visit, Deakins said.

Police removed the documents but were not able to interview the medical facility until Thursday morning.

Florida Today called Rockledge Urgent Care Center but was told the owner was not available.
