An Orlando police SWAT team member on a stakeout Thursday afternoon shot and killed a masked, armed assailant who was attempting to rob a business, authorities said.

The shooting took place at the Lake Fairview Marina located near Lee Road and Orange Blossom Trail.

According to Orlando police, officers received information that a robbery was going to take place at the marina, so they set up a stakeout.

SWAT team members encountered a masked assailant carrying a handgun at about 4:45 p.m., and the assailant fired shots at police, according to the Orlando Police Department.

The SWAT team returned fire, striking the assailant, who was transported to a nearby hospital.

No officers were injured in the incident.

"They're members of the SWAT team. As you know, they're very well trained to deal with situations like this," Orlando Police Chief Val Demings said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
