Deputies Dressed As 'Uncle Sam' Ticket 200 Speeding Drivers
"It is almost like entrapment," an angry motorist said. "It is like they were setting us up to get tickets today."Officers dressed like Uncle Sam will ticket speeding motorists, red-light runners, aggressive and intoxicated drivers over the next seven days in an effort to keep roadways safe for the Fourth of July week.On Monday, deputies issued 195 citations during laser-speed detection crackdowns at two locations; 110 were issued near the intersection of Curry Ford Road and Arbor View and 85 were handed out on state Road 50 near the Christmas post office. Some drivers said they were fooled by the costume."I saw Uncle Sam standing out there in his outfit so I tooted the horn," driver Richard Miller said. "The next thing I know I've got red and blue lights flashing behind me."Deputies said they will be taking a zero-tolerance approach with all traffic violators during the crackdown."It is what they got to do but I don't know, they could concentrate on more hard core criminals," driver Melissa Iglesias said.On Tuesday, Uncle Sam will crack down on red-light runners at two different locations in the county.Uncle Sam will also be assisting with Laser speed detection in various locations throughout the county. On Thursday, the Orange County Sheriff's Office will concentrate on stopping impaired and drunken drivers. And from the Fourth of July through Sunday, Uncle Sam and deputies will focus on aggressive and intoxicated drivers on roadways leading to area beaches and the attractions.A traffic citation for speeding starts at $101 for 9 mph more than the limit, while 10 mph more than the limit is $176. The penalty increases exponentially for every 5 mph more than the speed limit. The fine for a moving violation other than speeding is $136.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
