OCALA, Fla. -- An Ocala, Fla., veterinarian who allegedly botched a neutering surgery on a dog had his license suspended Thursday by state regulators, according to Local 6 News.
Dr. Adel Assad's license to practice veterinary medicine was suspended earlier this week by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation after surgery on an 11-month old poodle mix, Local 6 News reported.
The dog's owner, Teresa McCartney, reportedly took the dog to Assad for neutering in August. After the surgery, the dog allegedly continued to bleed for four days.
Another doctor reportedly discovered an incision in the dog's urethra that required additional surgery. The dog is recovering, according to Local 6 News.
Assad has been charged with operating a veterinary office without a premises permit and could face up to five years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
Before Tuesday's suspension, Assad was on probationary license status with the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine, according to a report.
Assad also was arrested Tuesday and charged with not having a required permit for his pet clinic.
