Playing Cards May Help Crack Cold Cases

POSTED: Monday, July 7, 2008
UPDATED: 3:50 pm EDT July 7, 2008

Authorities will give about 1,000 decks of "cold case" playing cards featuring photographs and facts about homicides or missing persons cases to inmates in the Osceola County Jail in the hopes of gathering new clues.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Office, Kissimmee Police Department and St. Cloud Police Department have partnered with Crimeline to implement the initiative.

The oldest case dates back to 1981. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of Ralph Thomas, who was found dead in the area of state Road 441 and Central Avenue in Kissimmee.

The most recent cold case is from July 2007. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office found a victim on Babb Road in Kissimmee. The cause of death is unknown.

"Law enforcement is always looking for new and innovative ways to solve crimes. Anything that provides clues and information to help detectives is beneficial," Sheriff Bob Hansell said.

Printing the deck of cards, which profiles 30 unsolved cases in Osceola County, Kissimmee and St. Cloud, was funded by local law enforcement.

Crimeline's toll free number is on each card, and every inmate will be given access to a phone in order to give information.
