POMONA PARK, Fla. -- A man was arrested Thursday after he threw a puppy against a pole, repeatedly threw the animal into a lake and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to revive it, Putnam County deputies said.
Sabeno Martinez-Perez was charged with felony animal cruelty after the incident on the public beach area of Lake Broward in Pomona Park.
Witnesses said Martinez-Perez threw the dog, a 10- to 12-week-old female mixed-breed, into the water numerous times only to revive the animal, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Witnesses also said Martinez-Perez was swinging the puppy by its neck and legs and throwing it against the pole securing the floating dock, the sheriff's office reported.
A sheriff's deputy asked Martinez-Perez to come from the floating dock to shore. As he swam toward the deputy, he dragged the puppy underwater, deputies said.
The deputy told Martinez to lift the dog out of the water, but he picked it up by its front legs, swung the puppy in front of himself and shook the animal vigorously, deputies said.
Martinez-Perez was arrested and the puppy was placed in the possession of Putnam County Animal Services.
The puppy appears to be doing OK, according to Animal Services.
