MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A Melbourne teen wearing underwear on his head to conceal his face during an armed robbery was arrested early Thursday morning, the Melbourne Police Department said.
Richard C. Clendenin, 19, was booked into the Brevard County Detention Center in Sharpes after he allegedly robbed the 7-Eleven located at 220 W. New Haven Ave. in Melbourne just before 1 a.m.
Police said Clendenin, wearing gray underwear on his head, which partially concealed his face, threatened the 7-Eleven clerk with a knife and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk gave Clendenin an undisclosed amount of money, and he fled on a bicycle, Sgt. Daniel Lynch told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Clendenin was followed by a witness, who then called police, Lynch said. A large perimeter was set up and an officer spotted a bicycle abandoned on the shore of a canal.
Police said a K-9 named Faro found key evidence in the robbery along the canal line, and Clendenin was later seen walking out from behind a closed business on Westwood Drive.
The 7-Eleven clerk positively identified Clendenin as the man who robbed him, police said.
Clendenin faces a charge of armed robbery while wearing a mask.
He is being held on no bond.
