WEST MELBOURNE -- SWAT teams surrounded an Office Depot business after reports that employees were tied up and injured by at least two armed men during a robbery.
Officers said a man armed with a gun and another armed with a knife robbed the Office Depot at 1131 West New Haven in West Melbourne, just west of Dairy Road on U.S. 192 at about 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Deputies were called to the business after a man suffering a head injury from an assault in the store said the store was being robbed, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
Initial reports from witnesses indicated that the employees were being held hostage but officers said everyone was safe.
"The employees are safe and we are in contact with them," West Melbourne police Cmdr. Steve Wilkinson said.
Wilkinson said at least one employee was tied up during the crime.
SWAT teams cleared the building and three employees were removed from a manager's office. One person was transported after apparently being injured by a knife during the incident. The victim's condition was not known.
Deputies and officers closed entrances to the Office Depot, where the Wild Oats grocery store used to be after the crime. Officers armed with M-16s were seen stationed behind palm trees and their cars.
"It was all quarantined off when I got here," said Steve Seidl, a manager at the store. "I usually get here an hour after everybody else. It's luck, I guess."
Officers also closed off U.S 1 eastbound and are detouring traffic at Shannon Road across from H&R Block. The roads were expected to be reopened Tuesday morning.
Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
