Mom Of Teen In Beating May Sue Sheriff

Woman Says Sheriff Didn't Display 'Integrity'

POSTED: Tuesday, July 22, 2008
UPDATED: 10:29 am EDT July 22,2008

The mother of one of the teens accused in the videotaped beating of a Central Florida girl has filed a notice to sue the Polk County Sheriff for making defamatory remarks.

Seventeen-year-old Mercades Nichols and four other teen girls were arrested in April and accused of attacking 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay. The attack was recorded on video and broadcast around the world.

The girls were charged with kidnapping and misdemeanor battery.

Nichols' mother has filed a notice to sue Sheriff Grady Judd for failing to handle the arrest of the teens "with integrity and a degree of care" that would have protected them "against unfair treatment and exposure."

The sheriff's office has six months to respond to the notice.
