Red-Light Camera Locations Announced

Orlando Mayor Says 500 Red-Light Crashes Occurred In 2007

POSTED: Wednesday, July 23, 2008
UPDATED: 4:15 pm EDT July 23,2008

The city of Orlando on Wednesday announced the seven intersections where cameras will be installed to help authorities catch red-light runners.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the cameras are being installed in an attempt to make the intersections safer.

"We had 500 crashes that were the result of red-light running last year," Dyer said.

The cameras, which are scheduled to be installed and operating by Sept. 1, will be located at:

  • Conroy and Vineland roads
  • Turkey Lake and Wallace roads
  • Michigan Avenue and Dixie Belle Drive
  • Lee Vista Boulevard and South Goldenrod Road
  • Westmoreland Drive and South Street
  • West Kaley Avenue and South Division Avenue
  • North Magnolia Avenue and East Concord Street

The cameras will cost the city an estimated $1 million.

A driver running a red light will receive a $125 civil fine in the mail. If a camera catches a driver running a red light more than twice, the cost doubles to $250.

"The money that we collect from the program is going to be used to offset the expenses. If we have additional revenue, we are going to look into expanding the program," Mike Rhodes of Orlando Code Enforcement said.

Cameras were recently placed at three Orange County intersections.
