Erratic Driving Prompted Incident, Police Say

Police have apprehended a man who fled on foot into the attic of a home following a car chase that reached speeds nearing 100 mph through two Brevard County cities, police said.

Officers -- with aid from the Brevard County sheriff's helicopter -- cornered the man, who has not been identified, in a Melbourne apartment complex along Babcock and University boulevard, Palm Bay police said.

The pursuit began shortly after 12:30 p.m. when Palm Bay police Officer Butch Palmer spotted a vehicle driving erratically, said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department.

"The officer saw the driver toss what appear to be drugs out of the car and attempted to conduct a traffic stop," Martinez told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. Martinez said the driver sped up to nearly 100 mph while traveling along portions of San Filippo and Malabar roads.

The driver then nearly hit two Palm Bay police patrol cruisers before heading into the Melbourne area near Village Green apartments near University Boulevard. During the foot chase, an officer jumped over a wall and fell, twisting his knee, officials report. The officer was not seriously injured.
