1988: Blues singer and guitarist Eddie James "Son" House Jr., noted for his highly emotional style of singing and slide guitar playing, dies from cancer of the larynx at age 86 in Detroit, Mich. In a short career interrupted by a spell in Parchman Farm penitentiary for allegedly killing a man in self-defense, Son House was a formative influence on blues greats like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
