TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard in Port Canaveral is investigating the cause of a crane that toppled into the water, spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel into the water early this morning at Titusville Municipal Marina.
No one was injured and no boats were damaged, Titusville Fire Department spokesman Scott Gaenicke told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. He said a 100-foot barge tipped between 2:30 and 2:45 a.m., toppling a 90-foot crane into the slip at the B-dock on Marina Road. The barge also sunk.
The Coast Guard is on scene and is in charge of the operation. A private contractor is on the way to the scene to raise the barge and the crane and clean up the fuel spill.
For now, containment boons are spread across the marina to keep fuel from spreading into the lagoon, Gaenicke said.
The marina is closed to incoming and outgoing traffic.
“This will be a multi-day effort,” Gaenicke said.
He said the Titusville Fire Department is leaving the scene, as there is no fire or safety hazard.
