DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A man and a teenager were bitten by sharks
while surfing Saturday, but their injuries were minor.
In the first incident, a 14-year-old boy from Oviedo, Fla.,
was surfing near New Smyrna Beach when he was bitten on the finger.
He refused treatment for the inch-long cut.
Later that day, 35-year-old Ivan Rios of Orlando was bitten
twice at Ponce Inlet. He was bitten on his left heel and behind the
left knee while sitting on his surfboard. He drove himself to an
area hospital.
The bites were the 15th and
16th reported in Volusia County this year.
Last year, 20 of Florida's 37 reported shark attacks were in the waters near the Ponce Inlet jetty.
There were 62 unprovoked shark attacks reported in the United States last year. Three were fatal, one each off Florida, North Carolina and Virginia.
