ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Central Florida will make modifications to Bright House Networks Stadium to lessen the "trampoline effect" caused by fans jumping up and down.
The modifications will focus on stiffening support beams in the two end-zone sections of the stadium. To reduce the movement associated with the synchronized motion, additional steel will be welded to the bottom of flanges of beams and girders in certain locations.
"These modifications will help ensure that all of our fans have an outstanding experience at our stadium," said Lee Kernek, associate vice president of administration and finance. "The modification work will not be noticeable to fans but will increase comfort and lessen the wear caused by the synchronized motion."
When the song "Kernkraft 400" by Zombie Nation was played last season, fans would jump, causing the stadium to "bounce."
Many stadiums around the country have experienced similar issues with this type of synchronized motion, which is different than the usual fan celebrations during a game, UCF officials said.
The cost of the modifications will be about $400,000. UCF will pay for about $100,000 of the project, while partners and donors will contribute the remaining funds.
All UCF contributions toward the stadium work will come from existing stadium project funds. No new money will be used, and the project will have no affect on students or other university areas.
Work is scheduled to begin before the season and continue for several weeks, but game days will not be impacted by the modifications, UCF officials said.
The UCF Knights kick off their college football season Aug. 30 with a home game against South Carolina State.
