Police Release Truck Images In Sniper Probe

White Box Truck First Spotted After Oct. 3 Shooting

POSTED: Saturday, October 12, 2002
UPDATED: 3:55 pm EDT October 13,2002

Two composite images of a white box truck spotted near more than one sniper shooting location in the Washington, D.C, area were made public Saturday afternoon.

Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose unveiled the images at a 5 p.m. press conference, emphasizing the graphics -- showing two angles of the truck -- are composites, not photographs.

"It is not a photograph of the truck. It has been modified. It has been retouched, and it is very close to what witnesses tell us from their memory," Moose said.

Moose says the truck was described as having white, oxidized paint, rather than a glossy finish. That leads him to believe that it may be an older truck.

There is also damage to the right rear bumper that doesn't come out clearly in the composites, Moose said.

He says there is large lettering on the side of the truck, but he says none of the witnesses could recall the exact wording.

The truck was first reported by a witness at the scene of shooting at a Montgomery County post office on Oct. 3.

However, Moose said the composite was developed after talking to several witnesses from more than one shooting location.

Witnesses were unable to remember a license plate number, Moose said.

Moose hopes the release of the truck graphics will help jog the memories of potential witnesses.

Meanwhile, the police chief said investigators remain very interested in a white Astro minivan seen near Friday's fatal shooting in Spotsylvania County, Va. Moose said investigators are talking with witnesses to try to put together a composite image of the vehicle, but he was unable to determine when that composite would be available.

Moose Continues To Express Concern About Media Coverage

Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose is expressing new concerns about media coverage of the sniper investigation.

D.C.-AREA SNIPER

At a Saturday briefing, he said some media organizations may have decided to follow investigators and may even be stationing people at locations where they expect investigators to go.

Moose appealed to news outlets to consider that they may be jeopardizing the investigation, risking the safety of investigators and compromising witnesses.

He said if witnesses believe their safety or their reputation may be jeopardized, their willingness to help law enforcement may be at risk.

Moose said he knows he cannot make the media stay away, but he asked reporters to appeal to their sense of "the greater good."

Earlier this week, Moose lashed out at media coverage of leaks about evidence and the employment of retired officers -- who aren't close to the case -- as media consultants.

After it was revealed in the media, police confirmed the existence of the only apparent communication from the killer -- a tarot card with the words "Mister Policeman, I am God."

Yet, police have not commented on everything from whether surveillance cameras have spotted the killer, to a Time magazine report that the FBI has asked the Pentagon to search its records for recently discharged G.I.s who had gone through sniper school.

Investigators Link 10th Shooting To Sniper

The fatal shooting of a Philadelphia man Friday in Fredericksburg, Va., has been linked to the other sniper shootings in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia region.

At a Saturday morning press conference, Maj. Howard Smith, of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office in Virginia, says the ballistic evidence confirmed the connection.

With this confirmation, Kenneth Bridges, a 53-year-old father of six, becomes the eighth to die since Oct. 2.Kenneth Bridges, Sniper Victim 10/11

Bridges (pictured, right) was shot once in the left upper back as he pumped gas off Interstate 95 Friday morning, Smith said.

He was hit about 50 feet from where a state trooper was writing a traffic ticket. The officer heard the shot and saw the victim fall.

The shooter sped away in the gray drizzle.

The governor's office says more bullet fragments were recovered from Friday's shooting than in any other of the shootings. The latest shooting is also considered the boldest attack yet due to the proximity of the police officer.

So far, 10 people have been shot in the string of shootings attributed to the sniper. A Bowie teenager shot earlier this week remains in critical but stable condition. Another woman, shot in a Fredericksburg parking lot, was treated for her injuries.

Virginia Gov. Mark Warner says he's confident the case will be solved.

When asked about what he wants to say to the sniper, Warner said, "I'm not sure what kind of appeal can be made to someone who has committed so many senseless acts of violence."

Spotsylvania County Sheriff Ronald Knight said all he would like to tell the sniper is, "You're under arrest."

Since Friday's shooting, Smith said Spotsylvania County police have received more than 1,900 phone calls with tips.

Police Knock On Motel Room Doors In Search

Near the Virginia gas station where a man was shot to death Friday, authorities were reportedly knocking on motel room doors in their search for witnesses -- and possibly the killer.

VIRGINIA EXXON SHOOTING

One man who was questioned says investigators compared his face with a photo of a sandy-haired man. Hobert Epps, of Athens, Ga., told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that "they thought I was the sniper."

Epps says investigators told him the picture was from a video surveillance camera near the scene of one of the shootings.

Meanwhile, Smith said police are still looking for a white Astro minivan that was reported in the area of Friday's shooting.

Guardian Angels Pump Gas For Travelers

Members of the volunteer public safety organization Guardian Angels are pumping gas at several stations in Alexandria, Va., for travelers reluctant to get out of their cars because of the deadly spree of sniper shootings.

Washington-area director John Ayala said, "We're just trying to do our part to make people safe." And he says people cannot stop going about their lives because of the sniper.

They have pumped gas at some stations along Route 1 off of Interstate 95.

Reward Fund Exceeds $500,000

The reward for information leading to the capture of the Washington-area sniper has grown to more than $500,000.

The fund got a boost with a $50,000 contribution from the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors, after a Philadelphia man in the Virginia county on business became the latest victim of the sniper.

Separate funds are assisting or honoring several of the sniper's victims.

Sonny's Kids, in memory of James "Sonny" Buchanan, will benefit needy youths in the community.

The Sarah Ramos Memorial Fund will support Ramos's husband and young son.

Another fund will help the husband and young daughter of Lori Lewis Rivera.

The Benjamin Tasker October 7th Fund will assist the 13-year-old student critically wounded outside that school.
