Path Puts Tropical Storm-Force Winds In Orange County Next Week
System Could Hit Florida As Cat. 2 Storm
The path showed the storm making landfall Tuesday night around Sarasota County or maybe in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells reported."It is at that time when it will not be a very enjoyable time here in Central Florida Tuesday night and into the overnight and into Wednesday morning," Sorrells said. "It may turn out to be a tough run before it's over."Strong tropical-storm force winds are expected in Orlando and throughout Central Florida Tuesday night on the current path."When it comes, it comes hard," Sorrells said. "(It could be) Category 1 or possible Category 2 as it makes landfall in Florida and drives toward the Georgia state line. It is going to be a three or four day event for us between now and the time it is over."Sorrells said that if the storm stays over the Gulf of Mexico it could grow into a major storm."If it were to come ashore over south Florida, that is actually a better fit for us," Sorrells said. "If it would dissolve and slow down and become a weaker tropical storm and come right through our area rather than slap us with the nasty side of a Category 1 or Category 2 hurricane."However, it remains difficult to estimate the strength of the storm as it closes in on land."Honestly the strength models are out to lunch," Sorrells said. "All the models latched on to it and raged it into a big storm but you can't really tell. If it is going to stay over land it is going weaken. If it stays over water, it strengthens quickly."The path of the system is similar to an August storm a few years ago. In 2006, Ernesto rolled in to Florida out of Cuba and only brought Central Florida marginal rain and no big damage.Winds were expected to remain about 45 mph Saturday as the system moved near Cuba.Fay continued to head toward the west at about 15 mph with sustained winds at 40 mph.Watch Local 6 News for more on this developing story.
