Thurman On Healthcare And Prescription Drugs

Healthcare

Karen has twice offered amendments to lower prescription drug prices and to protect seniors from drug price discrimination. She has fought for patient's rights and is the co sponsor of legislation that would make long-term care insurance more affordable for Americans.

Karen sponsored legislation that lets people deduct a portion of their long-term care insurance premiums from their taxes, and she's worked to give families a tax credit if they care for a disabled family member in their home.

Reducing the cost of Prescription Drugs!

Pill Box Pharmacist Rick Limehouse said many of his patients are struggling on a daily basis to pay for their prescriptions.

"As an independent pharmacist I have been appalled at the escalating cost of medication in the two short years since I have been in business. Since the public outcry against these rising costs, as a token of good will some drug companies have begun to offer discount cards or in some cases free medicine to qualifying patients but I have found them to be cumbersome and inconsistent in the benefits they provide. Many times the "discount" they offer is at the expense of the pharmacy. They discount what the pharmacist can charge but not what the pharmacy pays for the medication. At the same time they continue to raise the price of their medication at a rate far beyond anything that can be attributed to inflation. Representative Thurman is one of the few legislators who has taken the time and effort to discover the underlying cause of the high cost of medication in America, and that is the overpricing of drugs to the American public."

Pharmacist Ken Norfleet, who owns and operates the Sunshine Wellness Center in Brooksville, said he supports Rep. Thurman's effort to bring down prescription drug prices.

"Everyday, we see people coming into the pharmacy who decide not to buy their prescriptions or cut their dosages in half because they can't afford the high cost," said Pharmacist Ken Norfleet who owns the Sunshine Wellness Center in Brooksville. "They're jeopardizing their health and well being. I support Congresswoman Thurman's effort to get the drug manufacturers to lower their prices. The drug companies' profits are excessive and senior citizens are paying the price."
