"It's shiny across the roadway," said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kim Miller. "There are nickels in the grass, across the interstate."

Local 6 reported that some 4 million nickels were spilled on I-95 near Mims at county Road 5A just before Wednesday morning rush hour.

"They've approximated $187,000 worth of nickels that were strewn across southbound I-95 southbound," Local 6 traffic reporter Kim Sanders said. "We are hearing that one of the trucks was a U.S. Treasury truck transporting nickels from Philadelphia down to Miami."

Police said two rigs apparently collided in the southbound lanes of I-95.

"Some parts of this tractor-trailer are not even recognizable," Sanders said. "It almost looks like the trailer portion was ripped in half."

A security guard riding in the vehicle was killed in the crash and others were injured.

The road is expected to remain closed most of Wednesday morning.

Officers were detouring traffic off County Road 5A to U.S. Highway 1 to state Road 46.

The cause of the crash was not known.
