DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- One elderly women suffered a broken pelvis and another was uninjured in separate robberies in Daytona Beach on Tuesday, and police are warning elderly people in the area to be aware of their surroundings.
According to Daytona Beach police, Mildred Belanger, 81, was entering the front door of her home on South Seneca Boulevard at about 1:30 p.m. when an assailant forced his way inside and demanded money.
Belanger told the man that she didn't have any money, so he shoved her to the floor and stole jewelry from her dresser, Daytona Beach police said.
Belanger, who suffered a broken pelvis, was able to call her family, who then called police.
"She's survived breast cancer, colon cancer and then to have this happen," Belanger's daughter said. "It's made me furious. It just devastated me."
Less than an hour later, Margaret Rance, 79, was robbed of $105 in the parking lot of Wachovia Bank, located at 828 White St. in Daytona Beach, after making a transaction, police said.
The thief then ran westbound toward Derbyshire Road, Daytona Beach police said.
"I thank the Lord I was safe," Rance said. "He didn't hit me or nothing."
The assailant in both incidents was described as a black man wearing a red shirt who was soft-spoken.
"We shouldn't have to be attacked by these criminals," Rance said.
Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call the Daytona Beach Police Department.
