New Express Lanes Open On Heavily Traveled Central Florida Toll Road

POSTED: Thursday, October 2, 2008
UPDATED: 9:19 am EDT October 3, 2008

Two new express lanes opened early Friday on a busy toll road traveled by about 130,000 Central Floridians a day.

The Expressway Authority opened the E-Pass drive-through lanes at Conway Road westbound toward downtown Orlando.

Officials said anyone with an E-Pass can begin driving the road without slowing down.

Local 6 reported that the new lanes will not only save motorists time but also gas.

Local 6's Erik von Ancken determined that a car burns about a half of a gallon of gas while it is in traffic every hour. He multiplied that number by 30,000 cars going through the toll booth in rush hour and determined that if Central Floridians did not have to sit in 15 minutes of traffic at the toll booth, it could potentially save 5,100 gallons of gas.

The Expressway Authority said crashes at the toll booths are usually serious. So, the new lanes are expected to improve safety.

Officials said the Lake Underhill Bridge is under construction for widening in the area. But once that work is completed, traffic problems will be alleviated.

Free E-Pass Transponders

Meanwhile, 1,000 coupons for one free E-Pass transponders and e-clip transponder holders will be offered at the next University of Central Florida game on campus on Saturday.

The coupons will be given on Dean Plaza eastbound and University Plaza northbound (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) -- cash lanes only.

Free tolls courtesy of American Express and coupons will be handed out for one free E-Pass transponder.

And, if motorists sign up for automatic payment with an American Express using this coupon, they will receive $5 towards tolls.

Also, more E-Pass transponders will be passed out at the Conway West Plaza (9 a.m. as supplies last) -- cash lanes only.
