POSTED: Monday, October 6, 2008
UPDATED: 9:17 am EDT October 6, 2008

A 29-year-old was taken into custody over the weekend after police said he was caught breaking into a pet store and grabbing $2,500 worth of puppies.

Surveillance video showed Erik Orona grabbing puppies from cages inside the Just Puppies store located on South Orange Blossom Trail, police said.

"He took a brick from out back, smashed a window, climbed on a garbage can and made it past Brutus (guard dog)," store owner Tyler Thompson said. "He was determined and high."

A patrolling deputy noticed the shattered glass in front of the store before spotting Orona in the business.

When Orona left the business, he was surrounded by eight deputies.

The officers took the man into custody and found five small puppies worth $2,500 in a black sack in his possession.
