FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- St. Lucie County firefighters who knew a paramedic took a man's severed leg from a vehicle crash site may face disciplinary action, investigators said.
Authorities said Friday those who never reported the misconduct are being investigated.
Cindy Economou resigned after admitting she took the lower leg to train her cadaver dog to locate and follow the scent of decomposing human flesh.
The details from an internal investigation showed she told investigators she took the leg belonging to a car crash victim on Sept. 19 and was storing it in her home freezer.
It's the Fire District's policy to take a severed body part with the patient to the hospital if there is any chance of reattachment, or the body part goes to the medical examiner's office.
