DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Hundreds of sex offenders and predators were found to be living near an area where a 13-year-old cross-county runner was grabbed and told to get into a car during team practice.
Police said the girl was running ahead of her coach and several other teammates of the Warner Christian Academy cross-country team Tuesday when she was surprised by a stranger.
The victim was approached on South Ridgewood Road by a man driving a dark-colored vehicle, police said.
The girl told officers that the man, who had an Afro, yelled out, "Do you run?"
When the victim ignored the question, the man then yelled for the girl's phone number. She yelled back, "No," a police report said.
The man then ran across the street, grabbed the girl's shirt and told her to get in the car, she said.
The victim was able to pull away and continued to run to safety.
Police said the man apparently targeted the girl because she had separated from the other runners.
During a check of the area, Local 6 found 244 sex offenders and predators living in a five-mile radius of the intersection where the attack happened.
Anyone with information concerning the incident is urged to call Crimeline at 800423-TIPS.
