Biden Discusses Economy, Obama During Local 6 Interview

POSTED: Wednesday, October 8, 2008
UPDATED: 8:10 am EDT October 16, 2008

Questions from Central Floridians were presented to Sen. Joe Biden during his visit to Florida.

"We asked some of our viewers to submit questions to us via e-mail about what they'd like to hear from you," Local 6's Jacqueline London said. "First, (a question) from Andy O'Brien from Orlando who said, 'We know the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have contributed to the financial crisis we are in and the bailout plan but why haven't you or Sen. Obama insisted on congressional hearings for CEOs of those companies?'"

"Well, there are going to be hearings for CEOs of those companies and all the other companies," Biden said. "What Barack Obama insisted on was that this so-called rescue package makes sure that taxpayers are treated like investors (and to) make sure the CEOs cannot benefit from this at all."

"Gene Kessler of Melbourne says Gov. Palin has been attacked for not having enough experience. What makes Barack Obama qualified to be the next president of the United States?" London asked.

"His judgment," Biden said. "On every major issue since he's been a United States senator -- even when he was a state senator -- his judgment has been listened to and followed by others. Where it hasn't been followed, we've gotten ourselves in real trouble. His judgment about the war in Iraq, when John McCain said we'd be greeted as liberators and this would be over quickly and his judgment about not having enough forces in Afghanistan or enough resources there. John McCain (said) that the reason you don't hear about Afghanistan is because we've succeeded. On the major, major issues of the day, from the sub-prime mortgage crisis to foreign policy, Barack Obama's judgment has been there."

According to two new polls, the Obama-Biden message appears to be taking root in Florida, Local 6 reported.

A South Florida Sun-Sentinel survey of voters older than 60 years of age shows Obama ahead of McCain 45 percent to 43 percent.

A Miami Herald poll of voters ranging in age from 18 to 34 shows Obama with a commanding 52 percent to 42 percent lead.

"The poll numbers here in Florida have changed quite dramatically in the last week," London said. "What to you think is a contributing factor to them being in your favor now?"

"Well, I think there are a number of things," Biden said. "One, you have more home foreclosures in one month than any place in the United States of America -- more than 44,000 to 45,000 home foreclosures. Number two, look what John wants to do with the space program. He wants to essentially put it on ice. I think it is clear, Florida is hurting."

"Sen. Biden, this morning on "The Early Show" you used the words mildly dangerous in describing the McCain campaign's criticism of Barack Obama's associations with William Ayers. Why is that?," London asked. "Was Ayers not a domestic terrorist? And do you think people are judged at least in some way by the company they keep?

"Barack Obama was 8 years old when this guy was doing these bad things," Biden said. "This guy is no part of Barack's campaign and he'll be no part of an administration and it was 40 years ago. To make it sound like Barack is consorting with terrorists, the average people out there think, 'Well, God, is he sitting down and talking with these guys?' I just find it to be way over the top."

An examination of the record showed Obama and Ayers worked together for seven years to raise money for Chicago's schools, London reported. Their association ended in 2003.

Local 6 has asked the Republican party for an opportunity to interview John McCain or Sarah Palin but so far the offer has been refused.
