MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A man who led Melbourne police on a high-speed chase after an attempted traffic stop was arrested Friday morning, police said.
A Melbourne police dog tracked down Christopher Whitfield, 26, of Melbourne, who fled police at speeds up to 80 mph, then drove into a driveway at Pineda Crossing and hid in nearby woods, Melbourne police Sgt. Michael Casey told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Police said Whitfield was driving a white Ford F-150 that is owned by someone in Tennessee. When an officer attempted to stop Whitfield just after 8 a.m., Whitfield tried to ram the officer with the truck, then took off at a high rate of speed, Casey said.
The officer under Casey's command said he saw Whitfield throw something out the pickup's window when he fled. Casey said officers found narcotics at the site, but they might not be able to tie them to Whitfield.
A Brevard County Sheriff's Office helicopter and Melbourne police's K-9 unit were summoned after Whitfield pulled into the Pineda Crossing subdivision and parked the pickup in a driveway at 3154 Rio Vista Way, where he fled on foot. Officers found the driver's side door open and called on the K-9 unit and helicopter to help search for Whitfield.
"The dog followed a track into the woods where we found Whitfield hiding in an area behind some houses in the subdivision at 8:27 a.m.," Casey said.
Whitfield was arrested on charges of aggravated fleeing to elude, possession of narcotics and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, Casey said.
