DELTONA, Fla. -- Two teenagers discovered a skull and other human remains Thursday morning while walking in a wooded area in Deltona, sheriff's deputies said.
The remains, which appear to be that of an adult, were found about 150 yards into the woods off Alex Lane around 11:30 a.m., according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities were called by the mother of one of the teens, who took some of the bones home, deputies said.
"We saw little rib bones, and a hip bone and a leg bone still near the pants," Adam Norton said. "Then we found the skull. It was pretty nasty."
"I thought it was kind of cool because I thought of Halloween," Austin Cunningham said. "And then when I found out it was real, I was like, 'Damn. Wow. That's crazy.'"
Sheriff's investigators are gathering up the bones and searching for clothing, personal items or anything else that might provide clues to the identity of the victim and the cause of death. A chain was also found near the bones, investigators told Local 6 News.
The remains were turned over to the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office, which will assist in the investigation and try to determine the cause of death.
