School Cafeteria Fight Leads To Ice Ban

Principal Calls Decision Temporary

Ice dispensed from soda fountain machines at a Central Florida high school has been temporarily banned because several students began to hurl ice around the cafeteria during lunch, Titusville Principal Lori Spinner said.

"There isn't a need for ice," Spinner said. "We've had a few incidents, and they result in messes in the buildings and the potential for students to slip on the floor."

Students counter that they shouldn't be prevented from enjoying chilled drinks because of a few misbehaving classmates.

"I have never bought ice, I never intend on buying ice, and I don't even eat in the cafeteria, but as my friend Clare said, 'It's the principle of the thing,'" wrote Titusville High senior Kavita Chapla in the "Say What?" blog produced by Local 6 News partner Florida Today's Verge student journalists.

Chapla said the decision is not fair.

"I object to the entire student body being treated like children, because of a few immature kids in the cafeteria," the 18-year-old said. "Why can't those kids just be dealt with rather than punishing everyone who buys lunch with lukewarm drinks?"

Spinner stressed that the ban is temporary, and she will determine when the frozen privilege returns.

Dargan Thompson, an 18-year-old senior, called the policy a little frigid.

"Most people thought it was funny because it's so ridiculous that they would take ice away," she said.
