Boy, 4, Attacked By Dog At Day Care

Child Airlifted To Hospital

A 4-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital Tuesday morning after being attacked by a dog at a Deltona home day care, deputies said.

The boy, identified as Landon Hill, suffered puncture wounds to the top of the head and chest, but his injuries were not life-threatening, Volusia County sheriff's deputies said.

The attack occurred at Ms. Sherri's Childcare, which is licensed as Webster Family Childcare, on Yellowbird Avenue. No other children were injured.

Sherri Webster, who owns and operates the day care, also owns two dogs, a boxer mix named Libby and a lab-mix named Bear. The dogs were chained in her back yard when Bear attacked the boy.

"I just heard a child screaming, so I ran over there and saw the little boy on his hands and knees with the chain across his back, and the dog was just sitting there," said Tammi, a neighbor who called 911 and whose two children were among the 10 at the day care.

"I love him like he's my own. I'm sorry," cried Webster.

Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 showed animal control officials capturing the dog.

"The dog is gone -- just a freak accident," Webster said. "Every child I have (at the daycare), I've had since birth. They're like my own," Webster said while wearing a blood-stained shirt.

Local 6 News reported that the day care has a valid license and no history of any problems. It's not likely that the boy's parents will press charges against Webster, Local 6 News reported.
