The state Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit Monday alleging unfair and deceptive trade practices against Kane's Furniture, according to Local 6 News.

Nearly 4,200 complaints have been filed against Kane's Furniture involving at least 1,000 consumers, Local 6 News reported.

"There's 10 counts of unfair and deceptive trade practices based on misleading ads, defective furniture, delivery problems, credit card billing problems and all sorts of false promises," State Assistant Attorney General Jacqueline Dowd said.

Local 6 News reported that the 415 cases contained in the lawsuit represent more than $500,000 due consumers, not including damages or penalties.

Authorities said its lawsuit against Kane's Furniture is the largest on record against an area retailer.

"This is an unprecedented number of complaints," Dowd said. "I've never seen this many complaints for a retail operation before."

The suit names Kane's Furniture Corp., CEO Irvwin Novack and Vice President Doug Bravata.

The Problem Solvers investigative team has fielded "dozens and dozens" of complaints against Kane's Furniture during the past three years.

Local resident Penny Shye was featured in an earlier story after she allegedly paid for furniture from Kane's Furniture and never received it.

State authorities said that they've tried to resolve consumer issues with Kane's without going to court, Local 6 News reported.

"We received assurances from Kane's that they were going to address the consumer complaints," Dowd said. "Over a period of time, we have not seen the complaints being resolved."

The lawsuit also carries one count of civil theft.
